Sam Van Olffen est un artiste montpelliérain autodidacte qui pratique le Graphic Sampling. A la manière d'un DJ, il accorde des morceaux de photos entre eux afin de leur donner une cohérence visuelle. Il expose régulièrement en France et à l'étranger, son travail apparaît dans de nombreux ouvrages consacrés au steampunk.

- Comment expliquez-vous l'intérêt pour l'esthétique steampunk et dieselpunk ?
Sans doute car c'est un genre neuf dans lequel tout est encore à construire. Si la BD et la littérature commencent à être bien représentées, il y a en revanche encore beaucoup à faire en cinéma. La preuve en est qu'à ce sujet, l'un des films qui revient le plus souvent est Wild Wild West ; c'est dire la pauvreté du genre en ce média. Ça ramène aussi à un XIXe siècle suffisamment lointain aux nouvelles générations pour le considérer avec autant de nostalgie que de fantasmagorie et à un XXe siècle un peu plus proche apportant après le deuxième conflit mondial une notion de progrès plus immédiate comme la conquête spatiale ou encore Internet, qui ne sont tout de même pas des petites révolutions. Tout ceci fait germer l'imaginaire, permettant au public de fusionner avec le genre comme les cosplayers le font avec le manga par exemple.

- Vous êtes souvent associés au mouvement steampunk et dieselpunk, cela influence-t-il votre façon de travailler ou les thèmes que vous abordez ?
Nullement. Mais plus que le Steampunk ou le Dieselpunk, je préfère l'appellation «RétroFutur», plus juste à mon goût, même si cela ne s'applique pas toujours à ce que je fais. J'aime les relectures des thèmes classiques et ne les fait pourtant pas toujours dans les genres susnommés. C'est pour cela que lorsque j'évoque mon travail, je préfère parler de Sampling Graphique, la technique que j'utilise, plutôt que des genres dans lesquels je m'exprime.

- Que ces soit derrière un écran de fumée, caché par un masque à gaz ou une armure ou réduit à l'état d'ombre, l'homme semble perdu dans vos créations. Est-ce une métaphore de notre société déshumanisée ou s'agit-il d'un parti pris artistique ?
Si c'est une métaphore, ce n'est certainement pas une charge ou une critique de notre société. Les gens ne sont pas aveugles, ils voient parfaitement les choses par eux-mêmes. Nous sommes en pleine déshumanisation oui, eh bien tant pis pour nous. On a les sociétés que l'on mérite. Parti pris esthétique, oui aussi… ce n'est pas faux. J'adore les masque à gaz, cette uniformité dans le chaos. C'est beau et tragique en même temps cette idée de fin d'un monde sans la certitude d'un prochain.

- Vous avez beaucoup travaillé de façon monochrome pourquoi insérer aujourd'hui de la couleur dans vos travaux ?
La couleur est un moyen d'explorer des univers différents, une porte d'accès au monde des idées comme le savaient bien les grecs anciens. Puis ce n'est pas rien la couleur… certains en sont devenus fous, je pense à Van Gogh par exemple. On aurait donc tort de la malmener comme on le voit un peu trop souvent à mon goût. Pour le reste, bichromie ou couleur, bien que très différents dans le traitement, doivent rester au bénéfice de l'image. Dans tous les cas c'est cette dernière qui détermine l'utilisation de l'un ou l'autre, non le contraire.

How do you explain the interest for the aesthetic steampunk and dieselpunk?
Probably because it's a recent genre where everything is still to do. If it is well represented in comics and literature, there is a lack of the genre in cinema. The proof is that one of the movie that is the most often recalled is Wild Wild West. That is to say the poverty of the medium! I think that steampunk and dieselpunk bring back to a XIXth century far enough for the new generation to consider it with nostalgia and phantasmagoria but also to a XXth century a bit closer that gives after the WWII a notion of progress more immediate, like the spatial conquest or Internet, that are not small revolutions. All this allow the imaginary to grow and the public to merge with the genre like the cosplayers with japanese comics, for example.

You are often associated with the steampunk and dieselpunk movements. Does it influence the way you work or the themes you treat?
Not at all. I prefer the designation "retrofutur" for my work, more accurate, even if it does not always apply to what I do. I love to give new visions of classical themes and I'm not making that always in the aforesaid genres. That's why I'd rather talk about the technique, Graphic Sampling, than the genres in my works.

Behind a smoke screen, a gas mask, an armor or reduced to a shadow, the human being seems lost in your creations. Is it a metaphor of our society or an artistic choice?
If it is a metaphor, it's certainly not to charge or to critic the society. People are not blind. We are in the middle of dehumanization, alright, too bad for us. We have the society we deserve. It's also an artistic choice, that's right. I love gas masks, the uniformity they give to chaos. It's beautiful and tragic at the same time the idea of the end of the world without any certainty of a next one.

You worked a lot on monochromatic images. Why do you add colors today?
Color is a way to explore different universes, an access door to the world of ideas like the ancient Greeks knew well. It's a great thing, color… Some became mad about it, Van Gogh for example. It would be a mistake to mishandle it as we see too often nowadays. As for the rest, color or bichromy, even different in the treatment, must remain at the service of the image. This last one determines the use of one or other, not the contrary.
